CALIFORNIA / ROLLMERICAN
276–279 loss to Lasso’s Goldfish
Three points short. The receiver room is on notice.
Josh Allen (85), David Montgomery (51) and Jonathan Taylor (46) supplied 182 of California’s 276 points. London, Rice and Adams combined for 26. Derrick Henry’s 67 powered the Goldfish; this was a three-point game despite California’s uneven receiving line.
The fair review
Coker’s 51 and Wicks’s 26 are bench facts, not proof they could have saved the submitted lineup: both were acquired after kickoff. Deebo scored 23, but his exact pre-lock acquisition timing is unverified. The useful lesson is to compare roles and health before the next lock.
The Week 2 move
Vele and the 49ers are already on the current roster. Compare Vele, Deebo, Wicks and Sutton against the existing receiver slots; Coker’s ankle report makes practice participation essential. Diggs and Golden are verified free-agent receiver options. Keep Allen and the productive running-back core central to the plan.
The stars showed up. Too many supporting slots did not.
Jefferson (31.20), Montgomery (28.90) and McBride (24.50) produced 84.60 points. Maye, Waddle, Warren, Mevis and Patriots D/ST combined for 33.32. Tush Push’s Hurts, Robinson and Swift delivered 95.92; McPherson added 19 at kicker.
The fair review
Goff over Maye adds 5.62 in hindsight. Washington over Waddle adds 18.10, or Washington over Warren adds 9.00; Washington cannot fill both slots. Even Goff plus Washington at receiver leaves California 10.08 short. The loss cannot fairly be pinned on a single bench decision.
The Week 2 move
Put Washington into the WR/flex comparison, review Goff versus Maye before Thursday’s kickoff and address the kicker spot. Vele and Deebo are verified September 16 waiver options. Keep Jones’s role in view while Mason’s thumb is evaluated; one game does not establish a workload change.

rollmerican / FICTIONAL PRESS CONFERENCE
The three-point press conference
How does a team lose with 85 from its quarterback?
The rest of the lineup still counts. Allen, Montgomery and Taylor gave California a huge base, but the three starting receivers combined for 26. The Goldfish earned the result behind Henry’s 67.
Was Coker the obvious answer?
That would rewrite the timeline. He was acquired after his game began. His 51 is exciting for the roster, but it was not an available pregame correction in this evidence.
What changes for Week 2?
Vele and the 49ers are already in. The receiver meeting will compare targets, matchups and practice reports. Coker’s health comes before any victory lap over his box score.
His 1.20 hurt. A 33.80-point gap also includes Maye’s 14.82 and Mevis’s one point, plus an opponent with multiple major contributors. This was a team result.
Would the bench have rescued California?
Goff plus Washington over Maye and Waddle adds 23.72. That is still 10.08 short, and it is hindsight arithmetic. Washington only gets counted once.
What is the first repair?
A serious Washington conversation at WR or flex, a quarterback comparison before Thursday, and a kicker review. McBride and Jefferson gave this team reasons to work carefully instead of panic.
