One Crown Jewel Wasn’t Enough

Caleb Williams gave Queen in the North a throne; the rest of the lineup brought folding chairs.

Queen in the North got 87 points from Caleb Williams and is still down 303-200 entering Monday. There is your thesis and your indictment. When a quarterback detonates that loudly and the matchup still feels out of reach, the supporting slots deserve scrutiny alongside normal Week 1 variance. Christian McCaffrey scored 17, Saquon Barkley 16, Nico Collins 28 and Tyler Loop 14, but too many other slots acted like placeholders.

The most damaging decision was at tight end. Colston Loveland scored zero while Isaiah Likely scored 39 on the bench. That 39-point outcome gap is enormous, although Loveland carried the higher capture-time projection. It calls for a Week 2 reassessment, not a claim that Likely’s explosion was obvious before lock. Parker Washington’s 28 on the bench also beat Rome Odunze’s 10 and Malik Nabers’ 13, giving Queen another very fair reason to revisit its receiver pecking order.

Notice what is not a complaint. Brock Purdy’s 59 stayed on the bench, yes, but Caleb’s 87 made quarterback the least arguable spot on the roster. This is not about chasing every bench spike. It is about identifying the two decisions that were both legal and meaningful: Likely over Loveland, and possibly Washington into a receiver slot. Those are the choices that would have made the 303-200 deficit less ridiculous.

Monday brings only the Broncos defense for Queen in the North, so a comeback requires an extraordinary defensive score while Waddle can add to the Rebels’ total. Next week’s practical step is to use the waiver desk only after using the bench correctly. Devaughn Vele is fine depth if desired, but the first repair is internal: stop wasting Likely-level production behind a zero and stop acting as though Caleb can score for two rosters at once.
