The Bench Staged a Coup

Mr. McGibblets may still have a Monday pulse, but Sunday already wrote the real criticism.

Mr. McGibblets trails 220-168 entering Monday, with Kenneth Walker still left to chase Real Life Al Bundy. The projected finish at capture was only 220-190, so this is already asking a lot. But the Monday math is not the central issue. Sunday is. Trevor Lawrence’s 72, Christian Watson’s 53 and Dallas Goedert’s 39 on the bench identify the exact decisions worth revisiting.

Start with the cleanest comparison. Goedert scored 39 while Sam LaPorta scored 9. That is a direct, legal tight-end loss. Watson’s 53 would have transformed any of the starting receiver spots, especially Ja’Marr Chase’s 2 or DeVonta Smith’s 10. Lawrence over Joe Burrow, 72 to 39, is harsher only because quarterback choices draw more pregame confidence. Confidence is not points. Sunday keeps receipts.

There is a difference between process and outcome, and it matters. Chase was not a reckless start at kickoff just because he flopped. The problem is accumulation. One disappointing star can be survived. One week still cannot establish a pattern of bad management. It can establish three concrete comparisons to research before Week 2. Watson’s role, Lawrence’s matchup and Goedert’s involvement deserve more attention than an indiscriminate waiver spree.

Kenneth Walker still gives Monday a pulse, so no winner exists yet. The practical next-week step, though, is not waivers first. It is honesty first. Watson, Lawrence and Goedert have already earned larger seats in the internal debate. If roster depth still feels thin afterward, then the waiver desk’s Jordan Mason or Tyler Allgeier can help at running back. But this team’s first repair is to trust its own better answers when they are already in the building.
