The catch matters more than the names. The Patriots listed Henderson inactive for their Sep. 9 opener with an ankle injury. That makes him a recovery bet, not immediate running back insurance. California should check his next official practice report before deciding what it would pay; this column is not assigning him a return date.
California’s case is positional. Its current roster has Justin Jefferson and Jaylen Waddle starting at receiver, with Pittman, Jayden Reed and Josh Downs among the bench options. Swapping some receiver cover for potential running back upside could make sense for a manager willing to wait. It makes much less sense if California’s actual goal is a usable substitute right away.
Pat’s case would be choosing Pittman’s receiving role over the uncertainty of holding an injured back. Pat’s bench also included Chris Godwin Jr., Brock Purdy and Parker Washington, so the decision should depend on which future starting spot needs help. A bench label alone does not establish a surplus.
Both sides have good reasons to decline. California would give up receiver depth while accepting health uncertainty. Pat could prefer to wait for Henderson’s availability to improve before discussing his price. The proposal is worth a conversation only if those different timelines fit both rosters.
