Founder and head coach Pat Mercer assembled the franchise in Providence, recruiting overlooked players who shared his obsessive attention to detail. Every practice ended only when each assignment had been executed correctly, earning the club its intimidating reputation for precision.

The Standard was designed around that philosophy, featuring a flawless field, symmetrical architecture, and a brilliant silver victory bell rung after every score.
