The Tony Romo Fan Appreciation League offers no September grace period. Ten teams are chasing four playoff places, and Week 1 opens with three matchups separated by fewer than three points. California’s 2025 miss makes the assignment even sharper: turn a carefully built PPR roster into weekly points immediately.
The opener against Tush Push Nation is the closest California matchup of the week. Yahoo has Tush Push ahead 118.25–117.42, a difference of 0.83. California’s case rests on De’Von Achane, Justin Jefferson and Trey McBride creating repeatable reception volume. Tush Push brings the more explosive quarterback projection in Jalen Hurts and a dangerous Philadelphia pairing with A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.
This league will reward touches more consistently than Rollmerican, but the Week 1 board is still full of uncertainty. Several contenders carry questionable tags, and two early NFL games create decisions before the weekend injury picture is complete. Depth matters eventually. Tush Push owns the projected advantages at quarterback and RB1. California answers at wide receiver one, tight end and flex, with Justin Jefferson, Trey McBride and Jaylen Warren combining for a meaningful PPR counterweight. Jerky Jones is the week’s strongest favorite behind Justin Herbert, CeeDee Lamb, James Cook III and a deep veteran lineup. The Hawk’s Nest has Jayden Daniels, Derrick Henry and Amon-Ra St. Brown, whose 19.16 projection is the best receiver number in this matchup. McCaffrey’s Thursday status is the pivot: full workload makes Gone the rightful favorite; uncertainty gives Hawk a clean route to the upset.

The names that matter
Six players who can move the league
Drake Maye
Maye is healthy and locks tonight at 5:20 PM PT with a 19.69 projection. He does not have to beat Hurts outright, but California cannot afford a large quarterback deficit in a matchup separated by less than one point.
Trey McBride
McBride holds a 2.96-point edge over Tucker Kraft, the clearest positional advantage in the matchup. High-value targets and a full route share are the PPR foundation California drafted him to provide.
Justin Jefferson
Jefferson’s 16.92 leads California’s receivers and gives the lineup its safest target floor. He is the player most capable of balancing Tush Push’s projected QB and RB1 advantages without needing a touchdown.
Puka Nacua
Nacua is projected for 19.51 in the slate’s highest-total fantasy matchup. Pat’s Perfect Team needs a clear pregame status because there is no Sunday recovery if a questionable player is left in a Thursday slot.
Christian McCaffrey
Gone in 60 Saquons is favored by 3.10 with McCaffrey projected for 18.01. A workload limitation would immediately expose the favorite to The Hawk’s Nest’s more stable Sunday lineup.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba
JSN carries a 19.04 projection, the biggest receiver number in KY–Comedian. If he reaches it early, Comedian can force KY to chase ceiling for the rest of the week.

What to do before kickoff
Maye and the Patriots defense stay in
Maye is healthy and remains California’s drafted starter. The defense has a modest projection, but the current wire does not offer enough improvement to justify churn before the first snap.
Do not manufacture a Colts decision
Josh Downs and Michael Pittman Jr. are trending toward availability, but both can remain on the bench. Jefferson and Waddle have clearer starting roles, and Jaylen Warren supplies a steadier flex case.
