At The Canvas, football is supposed to make sense. Paintin’ Manning imagines routes as brushstrokes and formations as composition. The club’s stadium story even gives every scoring drive a job: add colour until the finished artwork reveals the score.
This is a comforting system. There is preparation. There is intention. Somewhere, presumably, there is a very clean brush that nobody is allowed to borrow.
Mr. McGibblets has entered the conversation. The Milwaukee club grew from an abandoned television costume into a franchise identity that combines carnival music, enormous eyes and an aggressively permanent smile. The Giggle Dome is what happens when the children’s programme acquires a competitive streak.
The joke works because the personalities are so far apart. Paintin’ Manning wants an opponent to realise, eventually, how carefully the whole thing was designed. McGibblets would settle for the opponent wondering why the mascot is still looking at them.
They are not playing one another this week: Manning faces Accomplished Accomplice and McGibblets meets Real Life Al Bundy. But as a tour of Rollmerican personalities, they make an excellent double bill. Visit the gallery first. You may need a quiet hour before the second stop.
